The wonderful macadamia nut
Packed with nutrients, vitamins and minerals, macadamia nuts are some of the most sought-after nuts in the world.
As well as being delicious and good for you, they’re also useful in a practical way.
Their husks can be used for fertiliser, the oil is used for a variety of products in the cosmetic industry, and whatever is left can be used as animal feed.
What many people don’t know about the macadamia nut, is that it is Australian!
It wasn’t until the late 19th Century that the legume first started to be grown outside Queensland.
It was decades later before an industry started to grow around this incredible nut, which is surprising considering its many health benefits.
Good for your heart
Our cold-pressed, extra virgin macadamia nut oil contains one of the highest levels of monounsaturated fats amongst all food oils, and at 84%, is even higher than Olive Oil!
Monounsaturated fats are the “good” type of fats, and actually help lower the bad (saturated) fat which raises cholesterol.
Basically, the bad type of cholesterol clogs arteries with plaque, but the good type, which is found in macadamia nut oil, carries that cholesterol back to the liver where it is broken down.
The result is a lowering of your bad cholesterol, resulting in a smaller chance of heart disease or stroke.
High in antioxidants
Free radicals are dangerous atoms in the body that have a spare electron and want to attach to something.
They are dangerous because once they attach to you, they can corrupt your DNA, resulting in cancer.
Macadamia oil is also very high in natural antioxidants which fight off free radicals, reducing your chances of developing cancer.
It also contains high levels of Omega 3 and Omega 6, which can have a powerful effect on the overall health of the body.
A healthy balance of antioxidants can reduce cancer risk, slow the ageing process and lessen the risk of vision loss due to cataracts and macular degeneration.
Great source of fibre
Most nuts are great sources of fibre, fats, and proteins, and macadamia nuts are no exception. Just a dozen nuts (30 grams) contain about 10 percent of your daily fibre needs.
Fibre is actually a complex carbohydrate found in plant cells that can’t be digested or absorbed by the small intestine.
Not only does fibre aid digestion, but also slows the rate at which sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream.
Eating plenty of fibre is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer.
Great for skin and hair
Like many other exotic oils such as coconut or avocado, macadamia oil is used in a long list of health and beauty products, and for good reason.
Each drop is rich in essential fatty acids, such as palmitoleic acid, which helps prevent premature aging, and Oleic Acid, which helps to prevent trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), making it perfect for moisturising dry, sensitive skin.
It also contains a high proportion of this omega-7 monounsaturated fat, giving the hair an extra boost, either when ingested or rubbed into the hair directly.
