Many companies claim to be the best at what they do, but as the first and largest global producer of Extra Virgin Avocado Oil, we’re quite happy to back ourselves on this.
If you’re serious about cooking, then you’ll know the importance of high-quality cooking oils, and our avocado oil is quite simply the best in the world.
Here are five reasons why…
We started in New Zealand
We first started in New Zealand’s Northland, using only the best Hass avocados the country produces. It wasn’t long before our award-winning extra virgin avocado oil grew in demand, so much so that New Zealand couldn’t supply enough of the fruit for our customers.
In 2007, we started looking for other suitable sites around the world that could not only meet our international demand, but would also produce the high-quality avocados we expected.
We found such a place in Nairobo, Kenya, and within 6 months we had over 400 small farm holdings growing certified organic avocados, which has now grown to over two thousand.
These farms are regularly visited by field officers, who work closely with the farmers year-round, providing education in farm management, organic fertilising, and water sustainability.
Our factory in Kenya is managed and staffed by Kenyans. We have a policy of employing staff with initiative, not necessarily education, and in doing so, we believe in giving everyone a fair chance at making a decent living.
Our sustainable practices
Our factory in Murang’a, Kenya is on the cutting edge of sustainable practices thanks to the Olivado Biogas Project.
This project aimed to find a sustainable solution to the waste produced by the factory, resulting in two enormous anaerobic digesters.
These two digesters produce up to 5,000 cubic metres of biogas per day and are the first of their kind in East Africa, transforming the waste produce into gas, electricity, and fertiliser.
With this clean natural gas, we can also power the two generators which run the factory, cool-stores and our packhouse.
Even the vehicles we use at the site, including the trucks used by our teams of avocado pickers, the field officers’ cars, and the staff buses, are all fuelled by natural gas cylinders, filled as required at the bottling plant.
How we make extra virgin avocado oil
Olivado literally wrote the book on how to make Extra Virgin Avocado Oil.
We invented the cold-pressed extraction method that is now used the world over, something we’re exceedingly proud of.
Our pioneering method takes the avocado pulp and mashes it up in a giant mixer, turning it into something resembling guacamole.
This puree then goes into a centrifuge, where it spins with enough force to separate the oil and the water contained in the pulp. This is the oil which is bottled and sold.
This is almost the same as the traditional method, but there’s one important difference: the temperature.
We never allow the temperature of the process to rise above 45 degrees Celsius, this ensures the oil keeps all the flavour, texture, and health benefits of the avocado fruit.
Only by this process can avocado oil be truly called extra virgin.
How we get the delicious flavour of our avocado oil
The extra work we put into our production process, the care and attention we take when sourcing the right avocados, and the experts we employ to make it all happen, are all evident when it comes to the final taste of our avocado oil.
A high-quality oil should have the characteristics of the fruit it came from. Our avocado oil is a beautiful dark green with a delicious avocado flavour – just like the fruit.
Smooth and buttery, our Extra Virgin Avocado Oil enhances almost any dish, and its versatility is impressive.
Avocados are the Swiss Army Knives of the kitchen. They can be used for frying, roasting, or baking, in all types of recipes. Sweet, savoury, hot or cold, they can be: sliced, mashed, as a dip or a spread, and even as a substitute for milk for vegans.
The goodness of our avocado oil
The health benefits of avocados are truly amazing.
Considered by many to be a superfood, avocados are packed with vitamins and minerals.
They contain more potassium than a banana, more protein than any other fruit, half the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin K, and a third of Vitamin C.
Although they are high in fat, it’s monounsaturated fat, which experts agree is the “good” type of fat. It helps lower cholesterol and also helps with a number of other coronary risk factors, including blood clot formation, in vitro LDL oxidative susceptibility, and insulin sensitivity.
Avocados are high in Vitamin E, an antioxidant which helps keep your hair healthier, thicker, and shinier. They’re also great for your skin, acting as a natural anti-aging nutrient, strengthening the capillary walls, and improving moisture and elasticity.
The secret of avocado oil is that it is different to most oils which are extracted from the seed of the plant, avocado oil is taken from the flesh of the avocado, thus retaining all its goodness.
