Native to Mexico, avocado trees now flourish around the world, from New Zealand to Israel.
Avocados are a densely packed fruit with around 20 minerals and vitamins. With such a vast array of nutrients, it’s not hard to see why people are talking about avocado oil health benefits.
For centuries avocados have been lauded for their health properties, and now modern science is finally confirming what people throughout history have known.
All oils are a mixture of fatty acids – monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated –and it’s the ratio of these acids that determine whether an oil is healthful or harmful.
While high in fats, nearly 70% of avocado oil is oleic acid, a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid. Avocados have only a small percentage of trans fats, making them unique in the cooking oil family.
Lowers cholesterol and improves heart health
Avocados are high in what are known as “healthy fats”, or monounsaturated fats. These not only lower bad cholesterol, but raise the good type of cholesterol. In fact, avocado oil has been proven to have the same affect in lowering cholesterol as olive oil, a much lauded healthier option.
Of course, a lower cholesterol level is beneficial for your heart, but avocados also help in other ways. Studies have shown monounsaturated fats have a positive effect on a number of coronary risk factors, including blood clot formation, in vitro LDL oxidative susceptibility and insulin sensitivity.
Helps fight diabetes
Speaking of insulin, those same monounsaturated fats in avocado oil can help people with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association found that a high monounsaturated fat diet enriched with avocado can help people use insulin more effectively and regulate blood sugar levels.
Blood pressure
Avocados are a great source of potassium, which is essential for several reasons. Potassium regulates your heartbeat, keeps muscles and nerves working, and helps lower blood pressure. Combine that with a healthier heart, and a decrease in blood pressure is practically assured.
Relieves arthritis pain
A study published in the Journal of Rheumatology reported avocados helped with the breakdown of cartilage and promoted repair. It is thought the oils help block the production of pro-inflammatory chemicals, therefore preventing any damage caused to the synovial cells in the joints.
Helps maintain skin and hair
Avocado oil is rich in vitamin E, which is an antioxidant essential for maintaining healthy hair. Vitamin E helps promote circulation to the scalp, and helps fight environmental damage to your hair, retaining moisture to the follicles, making it thicker and shinier.
Avocado oil is also high in lutein, a carotenoid found in vegetables like carrots, spinach, and kale. This is great for your skin, acting as a natural anti-aging nutrient, strengthening the capillary walls, and improving moisture and elasticity.
