5 reasons why avocado oil is good for you

Avocados are amazing.

More potassium than a banana, more protein than any other fruit, half the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin K, and a third of Vitamin C.

And this is just the start.

Avocado oil is one of the few cooking oils that isn’t made directly from seeds. Instead, it’s made by pressing the green, fleshy part of the fruit that surrounds the pit.

This difference is what allows the oil to retain so much of the goodness associated with the fruit. The result is all those natural vitamins and minerals survive the process and end up in your food.

Here are five ways in which avocado oil is good for you.

Hair and skin

When it comes to hair, Avocado oil helps strengthen and moisturise the hair shaft, helping prevent breakage. The reason is that the oil is extremely rich in oleic acid and monounsaturated fats, making it one of few oils that can actually penetrate the hair shaft and nourish your hair.

It’s also rich in vitamin E, which is helps promote circulation to the scalp, fights environmental damage, and maintains healthy hair.

This high percentage of vitamin E, along with potassium, lecithin, and many other nutrients, also help to nourish and moisturise your skin. On top of that, the fatty acids in Avocado oil help the skin retain its elasticity, which in turn slows the formation of wrinkles.

The anti-inflammatory effects of Avocado oil may be able to treat and possibly even prevent acne, while the oleic acid also promotes collagen production, which accelerates the healing process.

Great for your heart

Avocados are high in monounsaturated fats, which are known as “healthy fats”. These have the double effect of not only lowering bad cholesterol but also raising the good type of cholesterol.

In fact, Avocado oil has been proven to have the same effect in lowering cholesterol as olive oil, a much-lauded healthier option.

Evidence from controlled clinical studies has shown that monounsaturated fatty acids favourably affect a number of risk factors for coronary heart disease. One study showed that avocado oil supplements helped lower the risk of cardiovascular change.

Lowers blood pressure

Avocado oil might be the smart way to lower or maintain your blood pressure.

They are an excellent source of potassium, which not only helps lower blood pressure, but also keeps muscles and nerves working and helps to regulate your heartbeat.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found evidence that taking monounsaturated fat instead of carbohydrates can further lower blood pressure, improve lipid levels and reduce cardiovascular risk.

Helps fight diabetes

If you have type 2 diabetes, adding avocado to your diet may help you lose weight, lower cholesterol, and increase insulin sensitivity.

They are low in carbohydrates, which means they have little effect on blood sugar, so people with diabetes can eat them without causing a spike in sugar levels.

The American Diabetes Association found that a high monounsaturated fat diet enriched with Avocado can help people use insulin more effectively and regulate blood sugar levels.

Rich in antioxidants

Avocados are packed with antioxidants – such as vitamin E, carotenoids and tannins – substances that protect your cells against free radicals.

Free radicals are dangerous atoms in the body that have a spare electron.

This spare electron wants to attach onto something, namely you, and once they do, they can corrupt your DNA, playing a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases.
