Can quality cooking oils reduce heart disease?

As more and more studies into natural oils continue to show surprising results, it looks like we’ve been wrong about them for years, with the evidence showing they actually contain a wide-range of health benefits. Come take a look.

Cooking oils come in many different forms, and depending on how they are extracted, even the same oils can vary wildly.

Good quality oils are the key, not only to taste, but also health.

As science catches up with old wives’ tales about which oils are good for you in what way, more and more studies are showing evidence of a range of health benefits.

Healthy oils

Peanut oil and heart disease

Peanuts are packed with monounsaturated fats, which help lower the bad type of cholesterol, but at the same time raising the good type of cholesterol. In fact, peanuts have been shown to be one of the most cardio-protective whole foods there is, and only a handful of peanuts per day can cut the risk of heart disease by half!

Coconut oil and weight loss

Coconut oil has been demonised for having a high percentage of saturated fat, but these studies from the 1950s were incredibly flawed. Fat is an essential part of our diet, helping the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K.  The type of saturated fat found in coconut oil is also different, being mostly made up of lauric acid.

Lauric acid is a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT), which is considered one of the “good” types of cholesterol. Some studies have shown that MCTs can help burn calories, thus promoting weight loss. This is why coconut oil is widely used by body builders and endurance athletes.

Avocado oil and diabetes

Olivado’s Extra Virgin Avocado oil is extracted using our pioneering cold-pressed extraction method, which is now being used around the globe. This method allows the oil to keep its nutrients, and prevents them from being destroyed in the traditional process.

Using this method allows our avocados to keep their incredible source of potassium intact, which lowers blood pressure, keeps muscles and nerves working, and regulates your heartbeat. Potassium also helps to regulate blood sugar levels, especially for people with diabetes.

Healthy fats in oils

Olive oil and stroke

A staple of the Mediterranean diet, Olive oil has been used for centuries in home cooking. While high in fats, olive oil is made up mostly of the ‘healthy’ kind we talked about earlier, monounsaturated fats. These fats are considered healthy because they actively reduce the bad cholesterol in your blood, significantly lowering the risk of stroke and heart-attack.

Packed with antioxidants, such as Vitamin E, a balanced diet of olive oil can help slow the aging process and reduce the risk of cancer, along with cataracts and muscular degeneration. A new study has found that the Mediterranean diet, helps to increase longevity and is less prone to heart disease than the rest of Europe.

Sesame oil for your hair and skin

Sesame oil has been scientifically proven to be great for keeping your skin healthy and hydrated. Containing Vitamin E, it also helps to keep joints flexible, increases skin elasticity and smoothness and also helps to fight skin conditions and even slows down the aging process.

Sesame oil has also been used by many cultures throughout the ages to strengthen hair, firming hair fibres and retaining hair colour.

Almond oil to keep you regular

Again, used for centuries in the Mediterranean (hence it’s many mentions in the Bible), almond oil is an excellent source of Vitamins E and D. Research has shown that almond oil is particularly effective when it comes to gastro-intestinal issues.

In fact, eating almonds is proven to reduce the risk of colon cancer by half, and almond oil injections are used to treat a variety of intestinal problems, including IBS.

Two tablespoons of almond oil per day can relieve constipation, so pour it over your salads or vegetables for some mild relief!

Olivado Nut oils

Why use Olivado oils

Many cooking oils certainly come with incredible health benefits, but unfortunately many of the nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants found in oils are lost in the extraction process.

This is why we developed our cold pressed method, which allows us to squeeze the oils while the temperature remains below 50 degrees – allowing the oil to retain its goodness.

This pioneering method is now used all over the world – something we’re very proud of here at Olivado.

Our Natural Avocado Oil Infusion range are all extracted and refined without the use of chemicals, no additives are added, and our packaging is phthalate free, all meaning one thing- the goodness is guaranteed.

The rich smooth taste of our oils enhance the flavours of delicate foods, and our range of smoking points make everything from salad dressing to deep frying simple.
