Having been a staple of our diet for thousands of years, sesame oil comes with a host of old wives’ tales about the different medicinal benefits it brings, but now that modern science is catching up, there is empirical evidence they were right all along!
Taste and Cooking
Sesame cooking oil has an unmistakably unique, delicious, nutty flavour, that brings recipes to life.
It is most popular in Asia, especially in Korea, China, South India, where its widespread use is as prized as Olive Oil in the Mediterranean.
With a high smoking point, sesame oil is great for deep-frying, as well as BBQ’s and regular shallow frying and stir-fry dishes.
Incredible health benefits of Sesame oil
Confirming what generations before us have been saying for years, sesame seeds come with an impressive list of health benefits.
Hair and Skin
Sesame oil is a great source of Vitamin E, which can help protect skin from environmental factors, such as UV rays, toxins, and pollutions.
Blood Pressure
A 2007 study by the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine found that the oil can help reduce blood pressure in hypertensive patients.
The study also proved that sesame oil also has beneficial effects on the levels of triglyceride, electrolytes, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidants.
Another report to the American Heart Association’s annual meeting came to the same conclusion.
Researchers studied over 300 men and women with high blood pressure and switched them to sesame as their exclusive cooking oil.
Two months later, the patients’ average blood pressure dropped into the normal range!
Weight Loss
Sesame cooking oil is rich in lignans that cause the body to release more fat-burning liver enzymes.
A 2006 study, once again from the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine found that participants who consumed about two and a half tablespoons of the oil daily lost an average of 1.2 Kilos in just over a month.
When subjects stopped consuming sesame oil, they started to put the weight that they had lost back on.
Sesame oil lowers cholesterol
Many studies have shown sesame oil has been shown to affect cholesterol and triglyceride levels, mainly due to its main component sesamin.
This can help block absorption of cholesterol from the small intestine, with one study showing that just 3.6 mg of sesamin lowered total cholesterol levels by 8% after only two months.
